Some Advices to My Potential and New Clients

I recently listened to this episode of the Second Studio podcast, and thought I should share it. Below are what I have summarized with my own inputs. Take these as some advices to my potential and new clients.

  • Design is an iterative process. You can’t really start a project without starting the process with the architect. Doing your own research helps, but don’t kid yourself that it will replace the work by an architect.

  • Design starts with a concept. Don’t get fixated in insignificant, tangible things at the early stage of the project.

  • Tell the architect “why,” not “how.” Explain to the Architect your intent, your desires, your needs and your wants, but don’t tell the architect how to do it, because the architect is trained at it, and is probably much better at you than you are.

  • Open yourself up to the architect. Let the architect follow your logic, not your order.

  • Architecture is a problem solving process. Don’t short circuit it, and don’t think you can defy the law of physics or the market.

  • Don’t try to build your building with the permit set. CD and CA are there for a reason, especially for custom design. Design and construction are intricately connected. Architect is the best guardian for the client’s interest throughout the construction process.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
